Anisognathic. Aniso= unequal or dissimilar. gnathic= pertaining to the jaw. In this use referring to the upper and lower rows of cheek teeth being unequal in their width. top

Masseter muscle. The largest muscle of mastication.masseter muscle.jpg (37219 bytes) top

Premolars. The first three cheek. Three upper and lower for a total of 12. Foals are born with these (baby) teeth. These teeth are lost and are replaced with permanent teeth at the following intervals:

First 4       2 years and 6 months

Second 4   2 years and 8 months

Third 4      3 years and 6 months 

Times may vary + or- 2 to 3 months. This is usually called "cap shedding". Chewing problems may appear as the caps loosen and pinch soft tissue. top

Molars. The last three cheek teeth. Total of 12. These teeth are not present at birth. Eruption times are:

First 4       1 year  (in wear at 2 years)

Second 4   2 years (in wear at 3 years)

Third 4      3 years (in wear at 4 years)

Horse may show some difficulty chewing when these teeth are erupting because of gum tenderness. top
